One of the most important benefits of enzymes is that they contribute to the sustainability of the world owing to the solutions they offer in the field of food and agriculture. In addition, it increases the speed of production and efficiency in the sectors using these enzymes, and ensures that fresh water resources are preserved. As it replaces the chemical catalysts pre- viously used for this treatment, it reduces the carbon emissions and saves water and energy. It protects both the environment and human health as it enables pro- duction with zero waste. To give an example, while the waste water discharged by the facilities that use chem- icals to bleach the denim poisons the nature, the waste water of the facilities that do the same job with en- zymes makes a good home for the fish. In other words, it is a green technology which is absolutely sustainable and environmentally friendly. Currently, there are some large-scale companies around the world, which operate in the field of bio- technology. Our goal as LIVZYM is to contribute to the widespread use of enzymes in the industrial field by growing the market in our geography with a local language, as the first biotechnological enter- prise in the enzyme field. With the essential capac- ity boost and infrastructural investments, we aim to supply significant part of the enzymes needed by Turkey first, and then by our region. As one of the most concrete and successful ex- amples of reverse brain drain to Turkey, what do you think should be done to increase that and to bring our valuable scientists abroad back to our country? As I mentioned earlier, when I was in the USA, I al- ways dreamt of “establishing a biotechnology com- pany capable of producing the enzymes –which we import- using the national and domestic resources.”, relying on the question “How can I contribute to my country, based on my knowledge and experience in biotechnology?” However, I have to make it clear that my dream consisted of two phases. It was a must for the company I planned to establish that it should be equipped with the appropriate human resources, if it is to be successful and destined to survive. That’s why I returned to my country with the dream and goal of “realizing the two projects consisting of the establishment of a biotechnology company and a biotechnology institute, which would proceed si- multaneously”. daki dönüştürücü gücüyle, geleceği şekillendirecek bir itici güç olarak öne çıkıyor. Bu noktada endüstriyel enzimlerin hayatımızdaki önemi ve gerekliliği her geçen gün daha belirgin hale geliyor. Çeşitli sektörlerde teknolojik ara ürün olarak kullanılan enzimler, biyokimyasal özellikleriyle mua- dillerine göre daha çevreci ve uygulaması kolay alter- natifler. Enzim üretimi için gerekli mikroorganizmalar, modern moleküler biyoteknolojik yöntemlerle endüst- riyel üretime hazır hale getiriliyor. Enzimler çoğunlukla gıda alanında; nişasta, fırıncılık, süt, biracılık ve meyve suyu endüstrilerinde değerlendiriliyor. Ayrıca deterjan endüstrisi başta olmak üzere, tekstil, deri, kâğıt, yem endüstrileri, biyoyakıt üretimi ve kişisel bakım sektörü gibi pek çok alanda da kullanılıyor. Biz Livzym olarak üretim stratejilerimizde gıda ve yem güvenliğine ön- celik verdik. Enzimlerin en önemli faydalarından birisi gıda ve tarım alanında sunduğu çözümlerle, dünyanın sürdürülebilir- liğine katkı sunması. Bunların yanında kullanıldığı sek- törlerde üretim hızını ve verimini artırıyor, temiz su kay- naklarının korunmasını sağlıyor. Daha önceleri bu iş için kullanılan kimyasal katalizörlerin yerini aldığı için, kar- bon salımını azaltıyor, su ve enerji tasarrufu sağlıyor. Sıfır atıkla üretimi mümkün kıldığı için hem çevreyi hem de insan sağlığını koruyor. Örnek vermek gerekirse; jean kumaşını beyazlatmak için kimyasal madde kullanan te- sislerin atık suları doğayı zehirlerken, aynı işi enzimle yapan tesislerin atık sularında balıklar yaşıyor. Yani ta- mamen sürdürülebilir ve çevreci, yeşil bir teknoloji. Şu an dünyada biyoteknoloji alanında faaliyet gös- teren büyük şirketler mevcut. LİVZYM olarak amacımız biyoteknolojinin enzim alanındaki ilk biyoteknolojik işletmesi olarak lokal bir dil ile bulunduğumuz coğraf- yadaki pazarı büyüterek enzimlerin endüstriyel alan- daki kullanımının genişlemesine katkıda bulunmak. Gerekli kapasite artırımı ve altyapı yatırımlarıyla önce Türkiye’nin, daha sonra bölgemizin bütün enzim ihti- yacını karşılamayı hedefliyoruz. Türkiye’ye tersine beyin göçünün en somut ve başarılı örneklerinden biri olarak, bunun artması ve yurt dışındaki değerli bilim insanlarımızın ülkemize kazandırılması için neler yapılması gerektiğini düşü- nüyorsunuz? Bahsettiğim gibi; ABD’deyken “Ülkeme biyoteknoloji alanındaki altyapımdan hareketle nasıl katkı sağlayabi- lirim?” sorusundan yola çıkarak “Yurt dışından ithal etti- ğimiz enzimleri yerli ve milli imkânlarla üretebilecek bir biyoteknoloji şirketi kurmak” hayalimdi.
